Helping Women Feel at Ease with Mammograms During Breast Cancer Awareness Month
BELLAIRE & EAST JORDAN, MI — For many women, getting a mammogram can feel a little intimidating, especially the first time. But for Shannon, Mammography Technologist at Bellaire and East Jordan Family Health Centers, helping patients feel comfortable and supported is all part of her calling.
“I love getting to know my patients and seeing them every year,” Shannon said. “Providing yearly screening mammograms helps keep them healthy and gives them peace of mind about their breast health.”
With more than 25 years in radiology and 12 years specializing in mammography, Shannon currently performs screening mammograms at both the Bellaire and East Jordan Family Health Centers. The advanced technology gives radiologists a clearer, more detailed look at breast tissue, especially for women with dense breast tissue, allowing for earlier and more accurate detection.
According to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, women should begin annual screening mammograms at age 40, or earlier if they have a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors.
“While it may seem intimidating, we’ll answer your questions and help you feel at ease,” Shannon said. “A mammogram might be uncomfortable, but it shouldn’t be painful.”
You don’t have to be a patient at the Health Center to schedule a screening mammogram, anyone can make an appointment. The only requirement is that the Health Center can access previous mammogram images for comparison.
