East Jordan Family Health Center Celebrates National Health Center Week 2020

National campaign celebrates health centers lighting the way for healthier futures

East Jordan, Mich.—As part of National Health Center Week (NHCW), East Jordan Family Health Center, with locations in East Jordan and Bellaire, is hosting a  Virtual Read Along with Sam – Celebrating Kids Health Day. The national campaign runs Aug. 9–15 with the goal of raising awareness about the mission and accomplishments of America’s health centers over the past 50 years.

“National Health Center Week gives us an opportunity to connect with our community and celebrate the impact affordable healthcare within Antrim and Charlevoix County,” states Rachel Krino, Marketing and Outreach Director at East Jordan Family Health Center.

Join our provider, Sam Dyste, as he reads “Circus Ship” by Chris Van Dusen on Saturday, August 15 at 11 am. This Facebook virtual event is a partnership with Bellaire Public Library, Central Lake District Library and Jordan Valley District Library to celebrate Children’s Health Day during National Health Center Week.

More than 8 million children in the United States get their primary health care from a Community Health Center.  Without a doubt, the timing of National Health Center Week lends itself well to engaging the youngest members of our communities as they prepare to return to school.

East Jordan Family Health Center is part of a nationwide network of health centers that serve more than 30 million people. They are on the front lines of national public health challenges — whether that’s tackling the opioid crisis or stepping up to fight COVID-19. Without community health centers, many people would have to travel long distances to access care or even go without. Here in Michigan, health centers serve more than 709,000 patients at more than 330 sites throughout the state.

This year’s NHCW is a celebration of the ways that community health centers lighting the way for healthier communities, today and in the future, as well as a memorial for all health center employees and patients who lost their lives during the pandemic. In moments of pain and loss, health centers offer support and love. In moments of triumph, they offer hope and a vision for the future. Community health centers reach beyond the walls of conventional medicine to address the factors that may cause sickness, such as lack of nutrition, mental illness, homelessness, and substance use disorders.

Health center celebrations are scheduled across the country, including virtual health fairs, visits by members of Congress and state officials to local health centers, patient appreciation events, free health screenings, and much more.
